The near monthlong investigation into the death of a 20-year-Carlos Rashard Carter last month has led to a host of charges for Silver Spring resident Kaleab Abebe Berhanu, 20.
At approximately 3:22 a.m. on Sunday, April 9, officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police were called to the 11800 block of Old Columbia Pike to assist Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel.
Upon arrival, they found Carter, also a Silver Spring native, whose body had suffered from traumatic injuries.
First responders attempted to save Carter’s life, but he was later pronounced dead at an area hospital from his injuries.
During the investigation Berhanu was identified as the main suspect, and an arrest warrant was issued this week charging him with:
- First-degree murder;
- Home invasion;
- Firearm-related charges.
On Thursday, May 4, Berhanu was taken into custody without incident and taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he is being held without bond.
He is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
